How To: Make a Steampunk/Burlesque Fascinator Hat
I made myself a pretty fascinator hat today for my Steampunk outfit on Friday. I thought you might be interested in how I did it, so here is my How To for you :) I will wear my hair up and wear the hat to the side. I hope it will look as pretty as I imagine it :D
- thin cardboard (I recycled cookie packaging)
- hot glue gun
- sewing machine
- bias binding
- fake leather
- pearls, feathers, watch parts, organza, buttons, ribbons, flowers etc to embellish your hat
- a small hair comb or bobby pins to fixate the hat in your hair
Get started by drawing a circle the size your hat should become on the cardboard and cut it out. Cut out a circle of leather, slightly bigger than your cardboard.
Make a cut to the middle the cardboard circle, get it into a small cone shape and use the stapler to fixate it.
Now use the glue gun to glue the leather to the cardbpard cone. Make another cut to the middle of the middle of the leather circle and tighten it over the cardboard. Don’t worry, we will hide the cut later on :)
Now take your bias binding and sew it to the hat using your sewing machine. This can be a little tricky, depending on how thick the leather, the cardboard and the layer of glue is.
Now add flowers, beads, ribbons, watch parts, tulle etc to the hat. Hide the cut in the leather with the tulle. You can either sew everything to the hat by hand or use glue.
I made the flower by cutting out circles from organza and holding the edges to a candle so it will crinkle. After that I sew the pedals together and used brown beads to embellish the middle of the flower.
I also used the insides of an old watch to embellished my hat and to give it a more steampunk-esque look. You can also go with a totally different styling. Maybe gothic with plastic skeleton hands? Or glittery pink ? Use your imagination and show me what you’re coming up with :)
So long, have some more pictures.
